Jono this forum already have SimplePortal installed and the option for a "Home" tab and the stuff SimplePortal offers
Management have chosen not to have it turned on for some reason.

But i support the suggestion SP is an amazing add-on for SMF.

That explains a lot, thanks for explaining Magic!
I'm still puzzled why Management wouldn't turn on the home page option. Oh well.
